East Washington Academy School Pantry
The Jar is partnering with Second Harvest Food Bank who sponsors a school pantry program at East Washington Academy on the 2nd Wednesday of each month. The goal of the school pantry is to get parents more engaged with school staff, less stressed about meeting the food needs of their families and to alleviate child hunger.
At the school pantry we like to have enough volunteers that teachers and school staff can interact with families during the pantry and not be working to distribute food. This interaction builds relationships between children, families and school staff and encourages families to become more involved in activities at the school. More parental involvement at school can translate to better student behavior, attendance and academic performance. The food is important but secondary to the relationship building. This is why the pantry is limited to school families.
Volunteers Opportunities
Volunteers are needed to set up the pantry and distribute the food to families. The pantry is held from 4:00-6:00 PM in the EWA gym on the second Wednesday of each month and requires a total of 8-10 volunteers. Below is a description of the volunteer duties at the school pantry:
SET UP
1 hour | 5 volunteers | 3:00-4:00
Set up tables and move food from delivery pallets to tables for distribution.
DISTRIBUTION
2 hours | 8-10 volunteers | 4:00-6:00
Distribute food, help carry food to cars, wipe tables, break down boxes, move tables back into original configuration.
